Music Makers

Music Makers is a transition project for Rising 5s, focussing on families who may need additional support during a time of change as they prepare for their transition into Primary school. This musically based project uses thematic songs, games and activities to engage the children in music making, sharing activities with their parent / carer and peers in the group, establishing a sense of connection between families and nurturing greater levels of self-confidence.

Rising 5s approaching their move into primary school, parents / carers and school based Early Years practitioners.

An early year’s practitioner works with the group of invited children and their parents (during the summer term sessions) in a weekly session leading up to the summer holiday using musical activities to introduce different themes related to starting school e.g. eating healthy, good to be me, playing with numbers, story time… Exploring and making music together generates a sense of fun, nurtures a sense of belonging to the group, and develops a positive approach to starting school. During their first Autumn term at school, the same children invite a buddy from their new class to join them at the Music Makers sessions and enjoy sharing the activities with a new friend as they settle into school life..

How many children / families can I involve?

Music Makers works well with up to 10 children accompanied by their parent / carer

In the Autumn term, who takes part in the group?

All of the original children should be part of the group, and they are encouraged to bring along a buddy from their class to join them. In liaison with the school, we can extend this to include the whole YR class in a session or split a session into 2 halves to accommodate all of the children.
