Primary and Special Class Curriculum teaching

📄Class Curriculum Service Specification

Primary and Special Schools’ class teaching enables schools to bring in specialist teachers to deliver class curriculum music lessons.  Regular music lessons are a statutory part of the National Curriculum, as well as an essential part of the musical development of every child.  Delivered by HMS experts, this provision ensures high quality music teaching for your pupils.

Class curriculum teaching can be delivered to any year group from EYFS to Year 6, and to Special Settings.

Our specialist teachers will deliver weekly whole class music lessons.  Lessons will engage pupils in practical music-making to ensure a provision in line with National Curriculum requirements and Model Music Curriculum recommendations.  Teaching will build children’s musical skills and understanding through the key strands of performing, composing and listening.

Our teachers will work alongside class teachers and/or teaching assistants in school, and will liaise closely with the Music Lead, to ensure consistency and progression in your whole school music curriculum.  HMS teachers can deliver the school’s own schemes of work, or follow the HMS scheme ‘Curriculum Musical Maps’.  This is a fully resourced scheme, consisting of six progressive half-termly units of work.

Teaching is bought in for a full academic year.  The provision covers a 50 minute session per class, per week, with 10 minutes allocated for setting up and preparing the lesson.

Schools are charged £2,203.50 per class, per year.

The cost includes the staffing, resourcing and lesson delivery.

Special Settings – Liz Davies – Strategic Lead for Inclusion – liz.davies@hants.gov.uk

Can class curriculum teaching be used as PPA cover for our staff?

Yes, however please note that a member of school staff must be present at all times to support with individual needs within the class and to assist with assessment in the lessons.  This can be a teaching assistant rather than the class teacher.

Does the class curriculum teaching deliver the National Curriculum for Music?

Yes, our comprehensive music scheme ‘Musical Maps’ is a programme of study which ensures a broad and balanced coverage which meets the requirements set out in the National Curriculum for Music. This is underpinned by our ‘Pathways to Musical Independence’ – a progressive overview of musical skills and knowledge, informed by the Model Music Curriculum.

How is learning assessed?

Your HMS teacher will work alongside the class teacher to ensure that the appropriate processes for assessment and reporting are implemented in line with the school’s assessment policy.

What happens if the HMS teacher is unwell?

In the event of HMS staff being absent, we will be unable to provide cover, however schools will be refunded for any missed lessons.
