Music Production
What is Music Production?
Music production serves as an excellent companion to learning music theory and composition for primary and secondary pupils, where experienced and less experienced musicians can flourish alike.
In the same way that learners progress through achievement ‘stages’ in instrumental lessons with HMS, music production students progress through stages specific to them. Pupils first learn the fundamentals of navigating a professional digital audio workstation (DAW), before creating their own compositions. As they progress, pupils have the opportunity to explore sampling, synthesis, sound design, music for film/video games, live performance with technology, and much more.
Who is it for?
Music Production is suitable for any students in KS2-KS4 who are interesting in exploring making music through digital technology.
What does HMS provide?
We supply one of our music production teachers and all of the necessary equipment, so all that would be required of your school would be a small room with a few desks.
In the same way that a guitarist would be loaned a guitar for instrumental practice, we can offer software licences for home use, so that pupils can install on their home PC or Mac, and practice what they have learned in-between lessons. Alongside this we can also loan hardware in the form of midi controllers and DJ decks for further independent learning at home.

How long does it last?
Lessons are bought in like our Instrumental and Vocal provision. You can choose how much time you need based on the number of pupils learning each instrument. The recommended minimum time for a visit is 30mins. Teachers are timetabled for the whole year at the start of each academic year. Most schools budget for between 6-8 pupils per hour, but we can accommodate more beginners in an hour than that.
You can refer to our ‘Managing Instrumental Provision’ leaflet for further guidance.
How much does it cost?
Using funding from Arts Council England, Hampshire Music Service can heavily subsidise the cost of our instrumental and vocal teaching for you. We charge £51.50 per hour, across all 39 weeks of the academic year. Schools are refunded for missed lessons due to staff absence, which they are then able to pass back to parents and carers.
