Rock 2 the Beat
📄Rock2theBeat Service Specification
“Rock 2 the Beat has been a resounding success in our school, with over 65 pupils now learning to play and perform with Rock 2 the Beat on a weekly basis. It is great to see children really engaging with their teachers whilst learning to read music and playing popular songs that they know and relate to. Most of all, it is wonderful to see the enjoyment all of the children show whilst doing Rock 2 the Beat, and the progression they make from term to term. I’d highly recommend the quality of Rock 2 the Beat provision to all schools across Hampshire.”

What is Rock 2 the Beat?

Rock 2 the Beat is a ‘Direct to Parent’ provision designed to develop instrumental, vocal and band skills as well as promote growth in confidence and wellbeing. Rock 2 the Beat not only enriches the pupils who participate, but also has a proven positive impact on other areas of the school curriculum
Children learn contemporary Rock and Pop instruments – vocals, electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard and drums in a combination of small group lessons and whole band sessions, coming together at the end of each term to put on a performance.
“Thank you so much for providing this much needed opportunity for our children to enjoy making music within the school community. Such opportunities are so fantastic not only for experiencing learning a new instrument but also to develop all the team playing, mental wellbeing and academic enhancement skills that we know are so valuable for our children’s education – let’s hope lots more children are able to benefit from R2TB in the future!”
– Parent

Who is it for?
KS2 – Years 4-6 (in some special cases, Year 3s are invited to take part)
KS3/4 – Years 7-11
What does HMS provide?
In KS2, HMS provides two specialist teachers who teach simultaneously on their instruments.
In KS3/4, HMS provides one specialist teacher on a different model, where pupils are taught in 30 minute band sessions only.
In all cases, HMS provides all of the equipment needed, including all instruments and amplifiers. In most cases, we ask that we are able to store heavy items (incl. drum kit) in the school between lessons.

How long does it last?
A minimum of 10 sessions per term are guaranteed to parents, plus a performance. Each small group lesson in the first half term is 20 minutes long, and in the second half term band sessions are 40 minutes long. The provision runs all year, and parents are required to give a half term’s notice for stopping lessons.
In KS3/4, a different approach is usually taught, with pupils receiving a 30 minute band session per week.
How much does it cost?
Zero cost to school, although many schools subsidise or assist with pupil premium funding for suitable pupils.
Parents pay Hampshire Music Service directly – £36.50 per month, which covers the lessons, instrument loan and all resources available 24/7 online.
